Pinellas County Flood Blog: Understanding Our Risk

Welcome to the Pinellas County Flood Blog! Living in the Tampa Bay region is a unique
experience—we get to enjoy stunning beaches, beautiful weather, and a vibrant community. But
with that beauty comes a very real risk: flooding.

This blog is dedicated to helping you understand the flood hazards of our area, focusing
specifically on Pinellas County. We’ll explore the history of major storms, the science behind
storm surge, and, most importantly, the practical steps you can take to protect your home and
your family.

A Look Back: Pinellas County’s Hurricane History
While it’s been over a century since a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) made a direct
landfall in Tampa Bay, it’s a mistake to think we are immune. History shows us that our area has
always been vulnerable.
● The “Granddaddy” of All Hurricanes: The 1848 Tampa Bay Hurricane, also known as
the “Great Gale,” is a stark reminder of our vulnerability. This storm, believed to be a
Category 4, made landfall near modern-day Clearwater. It caused a storm surge of up to 15
feet in some areas, reshaping the coastline and submerging much of the Pinellas
peninsula.
● The 1921 “Tarpon Springs” Storm: In 1921, another major hurricane hit the region. It
made landfall near Tarpon Springs, causing significant damage and producing a storm
surge of nearly 11 feet in Tampa Bay. This storm, along with the 1848 hurricane, serves as
a powerful cautionary tale about the potential for devastating storm surge.

More recently, storms like Hurricane Irma (2017), Hurricane Ian (2022), and Hurricane Helene
(2024) have also brought significant flooding and damage to our region, even without a direct
hit. The lesson is clear: you don’t need a direct hit to experience a flood.
